(More customer reviews)Sooo I bought a bunch of curtains for my new apartment that was sorely lacking window treatments. Boy was that expensive - and I bought the $25 type panels at Target. But $25 x 20 for all the windows in the living room and dining room added up to a lot of $.
They looked great except they were horribly wrinkled from being wrapped up into cute little squares for shipment. And some of the curtains were so wrinkled that they weren't long enough to touch the floor.
I could have washed them, but washing curtains is the fastest way to damage them. So I figured it'd be worth it to buy a steamer.
It was.
This steamer heats up in about 2.5 - 3 minutes and it holds 8 oz of water. That might not sound like a lot but it was enough to steam 3 54" wide and 84" long panels at a time. Then I'd just refill and wait a few minutes and start up again. The wrinkles relaxed, and the curtains look like a million bucks and yeah, they touch the floor now.
What else came in the package besides the steamer? Well since it's a travel steamer it came with a converter and a ton of adapters for travel. I don't know all the adapters but from my travel experience you can take this baby to the UK, anywhere in Europe that has the 2 prong round adapter, Japan, and India. Of course this will work all over North America so feel free to go adapter-less in Canada and Mexico. I haven't been all over the world so I don't know where the other adapters would work. They all came neatly packed with the converter in a little zipper pouch.
As far as the ironing vs steaming debate, well they aren't the same thing. One does not replace the other. I see a steamer as being good for removing wrinkles from unstructured or softly structured items. The sleeves of a jacket, a skirt or a dress. This isn't what you'd use on knife pleats or a stiff collar. It's perfect for relaxing wrinkles if you are on say, a cruise or maybe you took some things out of storage and need them to look less crushed.
Overall I'm really happy with this. So why only 4 stars? Well the body of the steamer is a cylinder and the way they made it was via injection molding. So there is a seam that catches on loose knits and woven fabrics. On the satiny swags I bought? No catching. But on the nappy brocade curtains? They got snagged a few times. You can avoid snags by being sure to keep only the nozzle touching the fabric rather than the cylinder shaped body. But that's pretty hard to avoid.

(More customer reviews)First off, make sure you read all the directions before use! After getting through the short manual, I set up shop in the bathroom and intended to clean every surface. It took about 15-20 minutes with a full tank (48 oz) to be ready for use. I kept the bathroom door closed and locked because I was concerned about my children and puppies being curious and getting hurt. I understand why it takes so long to get going, but I was worried that one of my little ones would get into it. There really should be a lock on the trigger seeing as it has to be left for so long to warm up and all it takes is a second to get some major burns. That said, locking it in the bathroom did the trick for me.
Once it was ready, I started with the brass nozzle and cleaned my bathtub and shower. It worked very well with a bit of elbow grease to remove all the build up in the grout and around the shower head which are always a pain to keep clean. It was very easy to clean the areas around my faucet that are too narrow to clean with anything other than a toothbrush. I also did some polishing up of the toilet and the toddler seats and felt really great about the idea of disinfecting everything without chemicals. I had wanted a versatile cleaner like this for some time as my mother has a nice one that I've always been jealous of, but it costs her $40 every time she needs to refill the chemicals and they go pretty fast with regular use. As a result, she doesn't use it as much as she would like to. Not so with this steamer! I absolutely love that it's just tap water. So easy and simple. The manual does warn that over time you can get mineral build up from using non-distilled water but gives you clear directions on how to clean that up so I'm sure it won't be an issue when/if it happens.
Before finishing up with the nozzle, I found my own personal perfect use for the steamer. Cleaning my window screens! Several times a year, I have to take apart all our windows and haul the screens into the backyard to spray down with the hose. Not only is this time consuming, but it isn't all that effective. I still have to use up a ton of towels wiping them down to get them really clean. I decided to give the steamer a try on my bathroom screens and oh my gosh! Instantly clean. No scrubbing, no wiping, just clean. Even if I could use it for nothing else, I would use it for this. It will save me SO much time and headache in the long run.
Once I was done with the screen, I wanted to try the squeegee attachment on the windows and mirror. I am impatient and was annoyed that I had to wait 20 minutes for the attachment to cool before I could swap it out, so I used my oven mitt and easily took off the nozzle and replaced it with the squeegee. I'm very picky about streaky glass, and was VERY pleased that within seconds I had my mirror clean from top to bottom, even at the very top where I can't normally reach without a step ladder or climbing onto the vanity. It did leave little pools of water at the bottom but a quick wipe and it was cleaned up. And NO STREAKS!!
Finally, I put on the floor attachment and went to work on my tile. It was very quick and very simple. I left it to air dry as normal and the floor was clean in half the time with no chemicals. I love this steamer so much! It's making my family healthier thanks to being able to throw out the chemicals and it's saving me time and money. Does it get any better?!
My only gripes are the fact that there is no safety lock on the trigger for use when it's warming up and that there's no on board storage for all the accessories. I get that they wanted to keep the unit small and portable, but I have all this bulky accessories with nowhere to store them. Also, the cord is pretty short. I can imagine this is for safety reasons, but it's kind of a nuisance to keep moving it from plug to plug, even within a single room. Overall though, well worth the money!

Euro-Pro Shark SC618C Steam-in-a-Bottle, Hard-Surface Steam Cleaner Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this item against my better judgement (Shark's terrible performance reputation) because I needed a relatively portable steam cleaner for small jobs and was hoping this Shark might be user friendly (for a change). Disappointed again! The unit is portable, but the steam cleaning ability is minimal. In addition the user parts (steam release switch trigger, nozzle) are both plastic. Also this steam bottle must be filled from the bottom and has a flimsy rubber flat press on sealer cap which is akward to reseal after filling. The biggest negative of this unit is its erratic/inferior steaming performance. The manual claims it is a 1500 watt unit, but the steam emitted simply does not loosen everyday dirt/stains sufficiently for their removal using a cleaning cloth/towel and lots of "elbow grease". I used this Shark steam bottle both in the kitchen and the bathroom with disappointing results. The only good feature is a blue indicator light on the top which purportedly informs the user when steam "operating" temperature has been reached. However the light quickly changes to red (needs to reheat) when the plastic trigger is "pumped" a few times. In addition the steam continues to come out after the trigger is released. The steamer came in a blue bag with some worthless accessories and several "micro bead"(?) cleaning cloths. Buyer beware - another shark to avoid.

Bissell Steam Shot Hard-Surface Cleaner, 39N7A Review

(More customer reviews)I've had good luck with Bissell products, so, given conflicting reviews for other devices an insufficient reviews for the Steam Shot, I purchased one.
OK--it's true. Infomercials for such products are deceptive. Using chemical cleaners is a great deal faster and "easier" than this. Tortoise vs. the hare: This trudges very slowly compared to traditional cleaning. It requires patience.
My concerns with chemical cleaners include the residues left over that attract dirt and dust again, the unpleasantness of using and then worrying about chemicals, and, the concerns about using them near foodstuffs, utensils, prep and cooking surfaces, and, pots and pans.
The advantage of the Steam Shot (and, likely other similar "electric kettle" hand held colleague devices) is, that once a surface or item is clean, it really "is" clean. I don't have any fear or qualms even about using this on kitchen utensils, bread makers, microwaves, and, oven windows. It's also very good at cleaning kitchen cabinet fronts and vertical surfaces such as the outside of the dishwasher, trash compactor, and the fridge. One thing this is extraordinary at is getting at dirt between a metal (or porcelain) surface (say, a sink or stove) and counter tops (Formica, etc.). It's amazing at "rooting" out such dirt! This is also true of the "line" between back splashes and counter tops. I think that "touch-up" cleaning later on will be faster and easier....
Candle wax on the brick of the hearth? (Or a wall?--I'll need now to patch-paint!) The wax is tedious to remove in any case, yet, this is the best solution I've found--the unit definitely will melt wax so that it's easier to remove--absolutely!
As for waiting on the steam, I'm simply busy with scrubbing with a cloth or noting where to clean next--this is not a big problem for me; it seems that, as time goes on, heating up again is pretty fast. I've heard the item's boiling water while heating up. Although it's not always so hot, the steam can become really hot--I certainly believe it becomes hot enough to kill pathogens! It may certainly burn fingers, also, so precautions are smart. Despite what other reviewers think, my Steam Shot becomes very hot: It works! I'm not absolutely certain, but the "kettle" inside appears to be comprised of metal. The plastic of the unit and of the accessories appears to be high quality, also.
(When finished with the Steam Shot--allow it to cool sufficiently, then, slowly open the knob until it's removed (steam may slowly vent while opening). Then, before dumping the water, turn the unit slowly on its side over your sink and dump the water out--away from you--hopefully, the water won't "jet" out into your sink really quickly or explosively. (If so, this indicates that the water still is super-heated and dangerous (after all, it was both heated and pressurized): You don't want it ever to "jet" out at you or anyone else. Let the unit cool sufficiently longer next time!)
Conclusion:
This is nifty, and I enjoy cleaning with it. For heavy cleaning, this requires patience, but, I believe patience is rewarded and saves money! For certain unique household cleaning needs, this fits the bill really well! I haven't tried it, but, a dirty bar-b-q grate likely is too heavy a cleaning task for this. That always has been a pain....

Shark Steam Pocket Multi-Purpose Portable Steamer, SC630 Review

(More customer reviews)I bought my Shark steamer on a whim. We had just purchased a bank owned home and it had been left with a rotting chicken in the refrigerator. The tile had a dried stream of "blech" from the refrigerator to the lowest part of the floor where it had pooled. I bought the steamer to sanitize the floor along this path. Something amazing happened when I used it- the grout changed color DRAMATICALLY! I posted photos so you can see for yourself. At first I thought it was somehow bleaching the grout, but then I noticed that the grout around the perimeter of the room was indeed a much lighter color- matching the tile color. EWWWWW! I had previously mopped this floor several times with a regular mop and bucket, a Swiffer wetjet, and even along this same path with a toothbrush and cleaner on my hands and knees. Nothing did what the steamer did with just water and the nylon brush attachment. I dragged the whole family in to show them because I could not believe what I was seeing! I hated the floor when we moved in. I hated the dark grout and how chopped up the tile looked with the dark grout lines. After cleaning- the grout blends into the tile and the floor has a completely different look! It's truly amazing- check out my photos- you HAVE to see it to believe. I haven't tried any of the other attachments, but I have received a steam burn on my hand from working so close to the nozzle on the floor. It's hot, just as they warn. My only complaint is that you must hold the trigger for continuous steam, and when using it continuously- it runs out of water fairly fast. Don't know how it does if you are pumping it and steaming in short bursts. Frankly, I don't care- it has done more for my floor than I had hoped.

I could only find it online and purchased one for both my Mother and my Aunt. The trick is using distilled water (to prevent buildup) and not overfilling. I don't ever fill it even to the maximum level. That's when you have spilling and spurting onto your clothes. If you expect it to work like an iron, it won't. And it works better on some materials than others. But if you're looking for a great way to freshen clothes and cut back on dry cleaning bills, this is it! I don't iron, so I use this for everything except my cotton work shirts, which I have dry cleaned.

(More customer reviews)I compared this travel model with the full-size J-2000 steamer. They were both very good at removing wrinkles from business-type clothing. We steamed a full week's wardrobe, and the clothing done with the travel steamer looked just as good as the others. The only drawback to the travel model is related to its small size - it needs to be refilled every 3-6 garments, and the smaller steam head means that it takes longer to steam an item. However, I actually found that the small steam head worked better on small areas like collars and cuffs, especially since it has squared corners. The corners mean that you do have to be a bit careful with delicate knits, though. Worth the price if you really need to look your best when you travel.

It's not ready to use out of the box because you are supposed to wash all the bonnets before you use them. I didn't, and I found out why you're supposed to. They left lint residue everywhere. (More customer reviews)I purchased the shark because I was having a problem with my hand hurting me for days after scrubbing/cleaning my kitchen, bathrooms and laundry rooms. I would have been satisfied it it did just half of what it claimed on the infomercials. So, I decided to test it out on the small bathroom. I put the white microfiber cloth on the long stick and attached it to the hose. In less than 30 seconds I was wiping hair, and dirt off the baseboards with no effort. I did all the baseboards in under 5 minutes and completed the entire batroom in under 15. After completing the baseboards and floors, I took the microfiber cloth and wand off and used the direct steam to clean the sink, mirror, shower, and toliet. My bathroom floor, baseboards, & entire bathroom have never been cleaner. When I was done I was also imperssed that I didn't even break a sweat or smell like chemicals.
The only negative thing I have to say about this product is that I wish the cord would retract into the device. The cord is really long and I found it often getting in the way when I was down on the floor working on the baseboards. Other than that, this is an awesome machine and it exceeds my expetations!!!
